These RC yachts have a hull length of 65 cm and are a good choice to start due to several advantages (there is also a very similar 95 cm version). They are very easy to handle, demand a lower level of initial knowledge, and own a relatively fair robustness although they have plastic hulls which is one of their weaknesses which shortens their lifespan. The majority of users can rely on intuition when learning to navigate with a radio controller in their hands. Moreover, it is also necessary to emphasize the good performance of the DF sailboats, which proved to be reliable in various weather conditions through numerous regattas (some downsizes are in stronger winds and waves too). Also, fun is an inseparable part of the DF monoclass which is conducted by the Sailboat RC company as well. It is a good pick for anybody who wants to enter the RC sailing world and these small (cheap) boats will help you a lot to accumulate the basic knowledge and experience needed for bigger and much faster RC yachts, for example, IOM RC sailboats. Once you learn beginners skills within the DF class and test these plastic hulls, you will probably want to upgrade to faster boats that have much better performance alongside extremely strong and durable fiberglass hulls, and the IOM class is the best option there: very advanced class, perfect size with 1-meter hulls, highly developed technically, has many various innovative designs with an amazing organization behind it (IOMICA) and Sailboat RC decided to back it up with our state-of-the-art IOM sailboats. There are lots of great people sailing inside with a supportive IOM community and they enjoy a brilliant performance of one-meter yachts which have a very long tradition already – IOM class is even recognized by World Sailing (many decades ago)! So, in the long run with IOM class, you will have much more fun as the performance of new IOM designs is astonishing and you will save up a lot of your precious time & nerves for repairs and spare parts as these more advanced RC sailboats are not made from low-cost plastic compared to other cheaper sailboats, but instead, they use premium quality fibreglass and strongest two-component epoxy resin. Of course, that requires you to learn basic RC sailing skills first if you are a beginner in the RC sailing world…so, what are you waiting for?! However, if you are planning to sail RC sailboats for more years in future (in the long run), the IOM class is a better pick for you (strong fiberglass hulls that last many years, high-quality 3D moulded single-piece sails, more power, higher speed, much better overall performance and longevity…). Please make sure to put epoxy resin (a better option) or cyano glue (CA glue could deteriorate faster and allow leaks later) in deck eyes to ensure full waterproofness, and also protect your hull from inside around the keel box by following DF official rules.
